This spring, the editors of Esquire set off on a cross-country journey to discover the best of what the United States has to offer. From style to food and drink and other distinctly American oddities, we scoured this land by car from New York to L.A. Here is a sampling of what we encountered on our journey from Cincinnati, OH, to Nashville TN.

Coming into Nashville from the Kentucky side, with a brief stop at the Corvette Museum to view their sinkhole recovery efforts, you make your way through suburbs and urban sprawl just like you would any other American metropolis. It’s not until you get off the highway that it becomes clear you’ve arrived somewhere special… And in Nashville, even in the labyrinthine sprawl, you find hidden gems. This is a city in which any structure could house a legendary studio or famous band’s practice space, or the ultimate low-key watering hole or an artist’s collective. The community is broad and supportive, allowing creative efforts an environment in which to grow.
