Best in Travel 2016

from Lonely Planet

‘Music City’ pulls off a neat trick: meeting your expectations at the same time as subverting them. Yes, country is still the soul of the place, but Nashville is also experiencing rapid gentrification as a creative workforce moves in, attracted by the low cost of living and job opportunities in the expanding tech, healthcare and automotive industries. The crooners on lower Broadway may still sing of heartbreak and ruin, but everyone else is having a ball in this Southern boom town.

City Spotlight: More Than a Music Town, Nashville Is a Booming Marketing Hub

from Ad Age

“Nashville is known as Music City and wears that mantle proudly, but this town wants you to know it’s about more than, as one local pundit put it, “big hair, belt buckles and boots.” The area is also home to about 25 ad agencies, marketers like Mars Petcare, Nissan (Anne McGraw, who runs the automaker’s global digital marketing, was recently elected to the local school board), Cracker Barrel, Dollar General Corp., Genesco, Tractor Supply Co. and more. It’s also host to a burgeoning tech and fashion scene.”

Neighborhoods: East Nashville is the Hippest Part of Town

from the Washington Post

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — A trip to Nashville wouldn’t be complete without a visit to the honky-tonks of lower Broadway and a pilgrimage to the “mother church of country music,” the Ryman Auditorium, but once you’ve hit those, consider a trip across the river to Nashville’s hippest neighborhood.

East Nashville started out as separate city of country estates, enjoying a post-Civil War boom in the 1870s and 1880s, according to local historian and East Nashville resident Jim Hoobler. Beginning in 1916, a huge fire, the Great Depression and flight to the suburbs took their toll. Restoration of the area’s many Victorian homes and bungalows began in the 1970s, and has helped turn it into one of the city’s most desirable neighborhoods.

The 10 Best Places to Live Now: Nashville, Tennessee

From Men’s Journal

One of the many joys of living in Nashville is the way music suffuses life on an almost atomic level. On any given night, someone might lean into your ear, point to the guy on the pedal steel guitar, and rattle off a list of classic recordings he played on or tell you he wrote a song you know by heart. Talk to a computer programmer here and there’s a good chance he’ll compare coding to songwriting.

Thrillest names East Nashville one of The 12 Coolest Neighborhoods in America

From: Thrillest

If you take one lesson away from high school, it’s that not everyone is cool — playing the oboe or starring in Peter Pan usually doesn’t translate into being popular. But then you get outside the cafeteria and realize real-world cool has little to do with where you sit at lunch. And that now, artists, musicians, and restaurateurs have a way of finding one another in the hippest parts of town.

With that in mind, we leaned on our knowledge of the best America has to offer — in food, drink, and travel — and came up with the coolest neighborhoods in the country.
